Searching For West is a beautifully crafted short documentary spotlighting the life of a hunter in this modern world. Torn between spending time in the woods hunting, while struggling with being away from his growing family.

The film was produced by Helio Collective, a local Bozeman company. They are some seriously talented people who have a passion for Montana.

If you do a quick Google search for “Evernote” and append any other word to it, like “photography” or “recipes”, you will get a miriad of results on how to use Evernote for that particular subject. So, why fill the interweb with one more blog post about Evernote?? Simple. Evernote rocks! But not just for photography, or recipes, or notes. Evernote works for every part of your life. The most exciting part is you can probably use Evernote for things you haven’t even thought of yet. You see, the possibilities are somewhat endless. Unlike so many things we buy and use now days, Evernote has a flexibility about it that lets you mold it to whatever use you are trying to achieve.

“That’s great” you say, I’m still not sure how to use Evernote in my day to day life. Here’s some of our suggestions:

Want to eliminate the filing cabinet in your home office and save a ton of paper in the process? Simple! Sign up for paperless statements and bills. Set up a folder on you computer and Evernote can automatically import from it. All you have to do is save the PDF to that folder and presto, the document is part of Evernote and completely searchable. Create a stack of Notebooks in Evernote and create a Notebook for each of your usual “filing cabinet folders”. Simply drag the document to the appropriate folder and you have created an electronic filing system. For any documents you can’t get paperlessly, simply buy a decent document scanner and scan your bills and paperwork to the same folder.

Organize your business! For our photography business, we rely heavily on Evernote. Items you might find in our Evernote:

Information we’ve scouted for locations. This usually includes sample photos of the location, best shooting times, setup ideas, camera angles, and much more.

Project Ideas – This might include personal projects we’re working on or upcoming photo shoots we have scheduled. Including Client names, names of other people involved in the project, etc. This is also a great place to store documents relevant to specific shoots, like permits.

Owners Manuals – You should know your camera forward and backward, but it still never hurts to have an electronic copy of your camera’s owners manual. Throw any other product manuals you might need in here too.

Sales Information – This might include product pricing, product availabilty etc.

Did I mention Notebooks can be shared. My brother is my business partner and we share our business notebook so any ideas can immediately be updated and visible to both of us!

Use Evernote as a relationship manager! Keep in mind, this is different than a Contact Manager. I still use traditional contact management software for keeping addresses, phone numbers, and such. What I’m talking about here is relationships with contacts. Keep information for each meeting you have and take notes afterward. Note key things about the meeting such as names of members of their families, likes they have, recent trips they went on, etc. Anything that would be useful remembering later and would help make the relationship more personal.

Speaking of sharing notebooks – try sharing a note with your spouse to keep a weekly grocery list. That way you can both add to the list and whoever does the shopping has an up to date list at their finger tips!

Use your imagination! I’ve only highlighted a few uses but there really is no limit to Evernote’s helpfulness. Let us know in the comments how you use Evernote. I’m sure there’s a use we haven’t thought of yet!

This year Bone Daddy’s Custom Cycles hosted the 18th annual Beartooth Rally in Red Lodge, Montana. We had a great time with everyone in town! Every year it’s getting bigger and better.

On Friday we got up early, headed downtown, and scaled the Bone Daddy’s building on a sketchy ladder that wasn’t quite tall enough (for my liking). With a quick glance at Matt, he shoots me a smirk and I knew I was the one to shake my ass up that ladder. With a few quick words of encouragement, mostly “This time-lapse is going to be badass!”, I reached the top and looked out over our scene. This time-lapse IS going to be badass! After trying out a couple different tripods, I found one that would be sturdy enough all day. One of the Bone Daddy’s guys Dillon, was helping me out. He ran up and down the ladder like an experienced gymnast. He found us a long extension cord with melted sockets so we could run power to our GoPro camera all day. I got the GoPro over the ledge far enough where we had the Bone Daddy’s parking lot and Main St. perfectly framed up. It shot our time-lapse for about 8 hours that day. The rest of the day we drove all around Red Lodge shooting photos and video with another GoPro hooked up to the front of the Dodge.

Saturday was the day of the Poker Run. People travel from all around the U.S. to drive through the Beartooth Pass. Bone Daddy’s makes the drive part of their annual event. Riders collect cards at various locations for a chance at winning some cash. We sat up at a stop point from 9a.m. until 5p.m. shooting portraits of everyone that was driving by. Check through our website and find your picture!

We grabbed a table in the back and ordered some food and a couple cocktails. We ate our dinner mostly without chewing and ran down to Bone Daddy’s shop so we could get a good place in the garage for the caged MMA fights hosted by Fusion Fight League. There were hundreds of people crammed into the small garage, no air movement, and it was about 85+ degrees out that day. The fights got started and the energy was high. It was an amazing night with lots of great people!

We got a chance to sleep in a little on Sunday since the Iron Horse Rodeo didn’t start until 1pm. The town was packed and everyone started heading up to the Red Lodge fairgrounds to find a spot in the shady bleachers. The Iron Horse Rodeo is one of the main attractions of the entire weekend. We set up like last year and got a bunch of amazing shots of all the events. Check out all of our images from this year on our website! Thanks again to Bone Daddy’s, and we can’t wait to see everyone next year!

Quoted from one of our favorite photographers, Chase Jarvis.

Create, Share, Sustain, Repeat

First: Create

Always be creating things. Keep projects moving through your home or studio every day. Wether you are working diligently on your paid jobs or doing personal work, it is important to be continually doing anything and everything that you can. Stay busy.

Second: Share

Rep your work on the interweb! Get some honest and critical feedback from your fans and your peers. Put it on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, or your website. All of these are great ways to expose your kick-ass stuff to the general public.

Third: Sustain

When you are keeping yourself busy and pushing your work, you’re going to cultivate more jobs and clients to further sustain your business.

Fourth: Repeat

Repeat these again, and then again. Live your dream.

We need this reminder ourselves every day. It get’s difficult to find the time in this busy world to do the projects that YOU want to do, but one thing any successful photographer will tell you is that personal work is some of the most important work you can do. Get on it!
